Making Spelling Fun

The importance of making learning fun can’t be debated, it’s just a simple fact that every educator finds out while teaching. Spelling can be a complicated subject, but it can be introduced early on in a manner that will make it most enjoyable for your child, now and later.

These ideas are great ways to introduce letters, words and the fun of Spelling to children from Pre-k through elementary grades:

·         Spell with Objects – Decorate a large sheet of paper cut into the shape of a letter you’d like to introduce to your child with objects or pictures beginning with the letter.

·         Spell with Photos – Take photos of things that begin with the letter your child is learning about or of things that they are learning to spell. They can collect the photos and place them in a small album, writing the letter or word as a caption to accompany each picture.

·         Spell with Edibles – Make words with food or write words and letters in foods such as puddings, sugar, edible play dough or bake cookies in letter shapes together.

·         Spell with Beads – String words together with alphabet beads; this makes for a fun craft and helps little hands get a work out in their fine motor skills. Younger children can bead together words like “Dad” or “Mom” and younger children can spell out longer phrases or names and give their beaded necklaces or bracelets as gifts.

·         Spell with Singing – Seriously simple and effective way to teach just about anything!

·         Spell with Colors – Plain pencil and pen writing can quickly become boring for young writers, so adding some color might make them more up for the task. Offer an array of colored pencils, paints and assorted brushes, glitter glues, chalk and crayons in traditional form, as well as ergonomic crayons, block and triangular so your child can decide what works best for them.

·         Spell with Water Words – It’s simple, get out in the Summer air with foam brushes and a pail of water and let your child write words and letters to their heart’s content or make a spelling test fun by having it on your drive way!

·         Spell with a Game – Play bingo using words your child is learning. For older children, try holding a family Spelling bee or playing restaurant and having your child act as the waiter who must spell the words you “order” by writing them on a tablet or small notebook. Give them a tip for a job well done in the form of whatever treat you see fit.

Keep in mind that some children struggle with Spelling, even when they can read the word just fine when seeing it and focus on the fun of mastering spelling words from memory while going at your child’s pace.

    Del,

Thanks so much for your list of resources! I love to add physical activity when spelling words too! Like some jumping jacks to get some energy out. We also use www.spellingcity.com when we study at home. My kiddos love their games and I love that I can store leveled lists for them to practice with:)
