Do Homeschoolers Use Kindle Readers?

Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl TechnologyI had absolutely talked myself out of getting a Kindle until I started thinking about the convenience of taking it to Bible study and church to access different versions of the Bible, books on Apologetics, and various authors I enjoy reading from time to time.Tonight while waiting for my son to finish at Kumon, one of the other moms was reading via a Kindle and the weight of my envious eyes was no doubt felt. lol

Couple the new excuse I've found for wanting a reader with the recent drop in Kindle's price, and I'm dreaming of ordering my  reader yesterday... well, in all actuality such a purchase can't happen anytime soon... I don't have the budget for the nonessentials of life at the moment, but it's fun to dream. Whilst I dream... I can ask questions of current Kindle owners and build on my list of justifications for shelling out so many nickels and dimes!

I wonder if there's a practical application to using a Kindle for homeschooling purposes? If you have one, do your kids use it for book reading, or is it to the local library you go? I'd totally see my 9 year old going for a Kindle. He's always been a book worm and the idea of having his entire library packed into something the size of a single book would no doubt thrill him senseless.

Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl TechnologyAmong my many curiosities surrounding the Kindle is whether to go with the basic Kindle or the the more expensive model which offers 3G. There's only a $50 difference between the two models, but $50 is still $50. Still... I'd hate to buy the lesser Kindle only to wish I'd held out for the other.

I also wonder... can you highlight text on a reader?

Life is so complicated is it not? I must be rather spoiled if I can afford the time and energy to spend so much of my time thinking about readers.

I'm sorry I don't have any answer for you. I just wanted to say that I'm in the same boat! I have some Amazon credit saved up and I keep getting closer and closer to getting a Kindle. But, then I wonder if there's a better option? Or if I should get Basic or 3G? I even looked at the DX, then decided it was too expensive. Then I thought, well if I spend that much, I might as well get an iPad. And so it goes!

I have read other bloggers raving about the convenience of having a Kindle for school. Also, we had a guest speaker at church yesterday. He's from World Bible Translation and he was talking about how he and his wife both have a Kindle and how great they are for travel.

DD & I were at Office Max earlier today and they had the Sony Reader on clearance for $99. I just don't know enough about Sony, plus I didn't have the money in hand. But, you can bet I'll be doing some research tonight. :o)

I have been considering an e-reader for Ko-Ko. I am torn though. Kindle has children's books. Kobo (my husband has one) has the option of free upload from your local library. I don't know if I should wait for Kobo to have kids books or get the reduced priced kindle. If money were no option though, I'd chose an Ipad...for all of them.

We love ours for homeschooling. I'm constantly having to track down my 11yo ds so I can "steal" MY kindle back. (Guess what they're he's getting on his next birthday.)

There are a zillion classics for free at Amazon and I've been busy checking booklists for ideas of what to load onto ours.

I didn't think my little kids would be interested until they were more confident readers, but I loaded a primer for them, upped the text size, and wow, they were off.

I can go on for hours, but YES, we LOVE our Kindle, and I can't imagine homeschooling without it!
