Updates on Our Homeschooling Break and Summer School Progress

If you haven't read the "About Me" page on this site just yet, you may not realize that we're not currently homeschooling. The details explaining our (likely) temporary break from schooling from home are mentioned there. It's been the right choice for this season in our lives, but I do LOVE everything about homeschooling and hope to one day have my kids home again, where we can share the experience of learning together.

I wanted to update you all on our Summer School progress and share that my kids LOVE their Summer lessons (huge blessing!), which consist of just two classes, 4 times a week. They're only at the school for 2 hours a day and it's been a great blessing for all of us. My son who has Asperger's (high-functioning autism)  is taking math and art, and his little sister is taking computer and then second hour joins her brother for the art class. They love being around other kids, keeping busy with activities, and getting out of the house (sorta breaks up the day).

It was a big decision for us to send them to school for these 5 weeks, but I'm soooo glad we did. The cost was $180 per child for 2 courses, so we spent $360, which didn't come easy. We're making less income this year than last... a first for us! It's an economy thing, but I'm not going to complain... at least my husband still has a job (knock on wood)!

My daughter is enjoying her classes so much that she informed me last night she'd like 3 classes next year! Hmmmm.... not sure about that one. They offer a cooking class, which she wishes she could have taken this year. I don't have issue with that, but sending them out 3 hours a day, might be too much for me and them. After all, this is Summer and I think we should "break" more than we should school... I'd also like to spend some time with them. As for the "break" part...  I know there are a lot of strong opinions on this, but I really want my kids to have some real downtime before the start of school in August. Also... 3 classes would mean another $180 if they both took an extra class, so probably not going to happen! lol

One of the coolest benefits to my children having teachers other than me is that I can learn new teaching strategies, ideas for art projects, and learning games... then I can share them here! lol And uh, that's just what I've been doing and will continue to do so stay tuned!

Finally, forgive the ads on my site. Blogging is my primary work from home job and I have a hard time turning down work, even though it doesn't always seem relevant to the theme of homeschooling. I don't accept advertising from anyone promoting anything inappropriate, suspicious, or scammy in nature. Thanks to products purchased through my bookstore (link under header) I was able to buy my hubby a Father's Day gift... so many thanks for that! Commissions aren't high, but they do add up.

Take care my friends and God bless!
