Recommended Reading & Workbooks for Starting Homeschool
I've had a handful of people ask what books and resources we use for our homeschool, so I thought I'd list those items I can track down on the Internet for anyone interested.
Our core curriculum for first grade is currently: My Father's World
Our core curriculum for kindergarten has been MFW activities (along with our son) making more age-appropriate substitutions for things like math and phonics using store bought books.
I should mention that MFW does offer a kindergarten curriculum, we just didn't buy it. At the time I purchase our homeschooling materials last fall, I felt that we had enough materials in our possession to master kindergarten without adding to the expense or clutter of more materials... even though I'm sure MFW's kindergarten curriculum is wonderful!
Things we've used and liked so far:
For Art:
For Crafts and Monthly Activities:
For Math:
Teaching Tools
Use Pattern Blocks with: Pattern Animals Book
Early Readers
My son loves the Bob Book series. These books are very simple paperback books that provide a wonderful foundation for reading, but best of all they're small and easy for small hands to hold.
After we mastered the Bob Books, we moved onto Biscuit Books:
and Frog & Toad
My kids love the Biscuit book series and get a kick out of the adventures of Frog and Toad. We usually just check these books out at the library, but have purchased a handful of our favorites.
I'll update this list as we find more great learning resources. I'll also be working on adding more of my favorite homeschooling websites to my sidebar in the comings days and weeks. ; )
