Book Recommendation for Early Elementary
Today my 4 year old (5 on Sunday) had a major meltdown when she couldn't draw a realistic enough looking head on her depiction of a horse. Despite my encouraging words and my 6 year old son's reassurance that her drawing was pretty darn amazing, she crumbled it up into a ball and threw it on the floor in a puddle of tears.
This event wasn't typical of her at all and I wasn't sure if at the time she was simply tired, or if this is a normal part of her artistic development, realizing what she can and cannot do and coming to accept that it takes a lot of work to match your expectations.
In any case, I suddenly recalled a couple books we'd purchased last year about believing in your artistic abilities and that there are no wrong ways to draw. The books are truly fantastic and I recommend both the dot and ish, by Peter H. Reynolds.
We read both books twice, at their request and by the end she was happy again, sitting at her school table drawing -ish pictures and loving every last one of them! Want to know what an -ish drawing is? Guess you'll have to read the book!
