Free Online Reading Tutorial

I'd like to share another great schooling link with those of you who either homeschool, or simply have a desire to boost your child's progress. I think you'll find this resource quite beneficial!

DIY Reading Tutor is a Web site for parents wishing to teach reading, spelling & writing at home. There are over 400 free worksheets beginning with teaching letter sounds, letter formation and blending. As the student progresses they are introduced to word building, homophones, spelling rules, high frequency irregular words, simple but useful points of grammar & punctuation.

The worksheets contain small green print. This is the 'teaching dialogue' for parents who are unsure of how to teach. The entire programme is integrated. By the end of day 2 the student is writing their first sentence - with a capital letter (the first word is 'I') and a full stop. There is a 'New User' section to guide you if you haven't used the site before.

The web site contains 'level testing, making it easy to find a starting point. There is a search list for parents wishing to find particular work sheets eg 'punct (" ")' or 'ea as in bread' etc. The FAQ section offers a brief description of confusing terms such as 'phonological coding deficit'. You will find links to other useful sites and a 'helping hand' section to assist with letter reversals and auditory confusions.
